Selling PDF on Amazon?

Short answer: not as a PDF. Amazon does not deliver downloadable PDF files to customers. The way to sell a book on Amazon is through Kindle Direct Publishing (KDP), which takes your manuscript and converts it into Kindle's reflowable e-book format. Customers read it in the Kindle app — they never receive your PDF.

That matters for two reasons. First, anything where layout is the point — study notes with diagrams, worksheets, planners, design-heavy guides — often breaks or looks wrong once reflowed. Second, KDP keeps a significant chunk of every sale.

KDP offers two royalty tiers: 35% or 70%. The 70% rate sounds great, but it only applies within specific price bands and after Amazon subtracts a per-megabyte "delivery cost," which eats into image-heavy files. Outside those bands — or in many regional stores — you're on 35%. Either way, Amazon keeps a third to two-thirds of your list price, and controls how you're allowed to price.
