About this PDF

The Beginner book asked what investing is and what could go wrong; the Advanced book measured return, looked inside bonds and funds, and weighed the evidence. This Professional book assumes both and turns to how practitioners work: reading a company's own reports, using ratios without being fooled by them, doing portfolio arithmetic, reading credit and the yield curve, understanding how a trade happens, rebalancing, checking the people who advise you, and keeping a due-diligence file. It will not tell you what to buy - and "Professional" refers to the working method, not to a qualification this book awards. This 22-page illustrated English guide runs through eight chapters: reading a company's own reports; valuation ratios and their limits; portfolio arithmetic; credit and the yield curve; how a trade really happens; rebalancing and regular investing; who is advising you?; and the due-diligence file. A glossary of investing terms and a Professional Study Record page for your own file and checklist sit at the back. Each chapter opens with a short scene, explains an idea using named public sources, shows a worked example with invented company names and numbers, and ends with a short exercise on paper. The invented names and numbers show how a calculation works - they are not forecasts and not typical results. Where a statement comes from a public source, the source is named and the Sources page lists the addresses. The sources are from the United States and describe United States rules and tools; other countries have their own regulators, registers and reports. Every investment involves risk, and you can lose some or all of your money. Important: this is general education - it is not investment, tax or legal advice, it recommends no product, company or fund, and it cannot replace a licensed or registered professional who knows your situation. Anyone under 18 should involve a parent, guardian or trusted adult before any step involving real money.
