Learning Chess - Advanced Level
About this PDF
The Beginner book covered the board, the pieces, legal moves, checkmate and stalemate. This Advanced book is for players who already play and want to think better: calculation, evaluation, pawn structures, planning, attack, defence, openings, endings and the tournament rules that decide real games. This 64-page guide runs through 18 lessons: testing your decisions rather than your rating; giving the opponent's best reply its place; spotting incomplete calculation; overloading a defender; how move order changes the question; judging the position you actually reach; pawn-structure choices; getting a piece to a good square and a job; stopping the opponent's plan; attacking with lines, not enthusiasm; defence that changes the geometry; positional opening preparation; counting the ending before you trade; king opposition; the Lucena and Philidor rook endings; minor pieces and the colour of key squares; the specific rules that apply in tournaments; and a final lesson on verifying your own analysis. Every lesson gives an explanation, a worked analysis, a position to try on your own, and answers with reasons. A glossary of advanced chess terms, an 18-point personal study log and a full source list sit at the back. The positions are original constructions, and every stated ending is checked against the official Lichess tablebase. Rules follow the FIDE Laws of Chess in force since 1 January 2023 and the 2026 Arbiters' Manual, verified November 2026, with named links on the Sources page. Openings are taught as sound lessons, not as best or complete preparation. Best suited to players who have finished the Beginner book and already play - at school, in clubs or online - and want to analyse their own games honestly. The Professional book goes further into analysis, teaching and organising play. Important: this is general chess education, not a FIDE certificate, a coaching qualification or an arbiter's ruling, and no title, rating or result is guaranteed. At an event, the arb
